Word!!!

Encumbrances.   I think that will be my word for the year. Thought I have heard about choosing a word for your year,  I have never done anything like that before.  I have done resolutions on occasion, but those fall by the wayside soon after the 1st of the year.

This time, I have been working on setting some goals and part of that, I have felt, had to do with picking a word for this year.  I don’t know why other than it seems like something I need to be doing.  You guys are going to be my accountability.  Hopefully, I would like to write something about encumbrances every once in awhile this year.

(I hadn’t thought about that til just now.  Seems like a good idea doesn’t it??)

So here, this is what I mean when I say that I have picked encumbrance for my word this year:

Amplified Bible  Hebrews 12:1
Therefore then, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses [who have borne testimony to the Truth], let us strip off and throw aside every encumbrance (unnecessary weight) and that sin which so readily (deftly and cleverly) clings to and entangles us, and let us run with patient endurance and steady and active persistence the appointed course of the race that is set before us,

Last night, at prayer, I heard this word several times through the course of our prayers and discussions.  It seemed to “click” so to speak.  It felt like it was the word I needed for this year.  Not only it an interesting word in itself, but it seems to be important for me to get rid of all those things, those unnecessary weights, that keep me from being all I could be.

To begin with, I think I need to spend some time dealing with things that encumber me and keep me from God.  This month I will spend in fasting.  Part of my fast will be a negativity fast.  I usually am not terribly negative, but I have that part of me that is inside my head that is very much negative, and on occasion, it does come out.  I want to work on dealing with those negative thoughts and talk.

Another part of my personal fast will be a Daniel fast.  In the book of Daniel, he and his friends asked to be fed the good fruits and vegetables and they looked healthier than all the rest of the kings subjects.  For me, I am not entirely sure what my Daniel fast will look like.  I will need to figure that out a bit.  Obviously fruits and vegetables will be a huge part of my diet for the next month, but what about dairy?  Will I add in some eggs?  Will I just keep my diet whole foods with some meats??

This is my goal:

But [now] I am fearful, lest that even as the serpent beguiled Eve by his cunning, so your minds may be corrupted and seduced from wholehearted and sincere and pure devotion to Christ.  amplified 2 Corinthians 11:3

I want to start out this year by getting rid of anything in me that keeps me entangled (encumbered) and from a wholehearted and sincere and pure devotion to Jesus.  This is the fast I have chosen.

If you would like to join me in choosing a word for this year, let me know in the comments.  I would love to hear the words God has given you for your new year.

If you would like to join me for the month of January fasting, that would be fun!  The more the merrier, right??!!  I hope we can encourage each other on those days we just want to quit and eat that pint of custard that my son brought home from work!!

Blessings and a Very Happy New Year to you all!!
