Lots again as usual. I know, your shocked. Put on your shocked face..
The house is getting stained. Finally. It’s been on the list all year, but a soggy spring and a busy summer kept it on the list. Hubby started it last week got a few days in and then its been damp and he hasn’t been able to get back to it.
The deck was stained a little over a week ago. That was fun trying to keep the animals off of it! I ruined a brand new shirt pulling one of them off the freshly stained deck! Well, its done and finally put back together for the last few weeks of fall. Its not totally the way I want it, but the rug and furniture are on it so that is something. It hasn’t really been all set up nice all summer and its almost time to put it all away for another year. Oh well. Next year.
Schooling is finally coming together. Only 5 weeks in. sigh……. I finally feel like I am getting it all in and done and we seem to be catching on to a sort of routine. I realized a few things. One, Essentials from Classical Conversations is way to complicated. It needs to be simplified so that I can understand it. The kids have been working on the charts and memorizing them, youngest 2 can recite the sentence patterns and also the simple sentence forms from memory. The bigger problem is that I can’t understand how to teach them the concepts. There is so much information and so much paper that I get confused and bogged down. I can’t figure out what is supposed to be taught and what is just suggestions for teaching. We are switching to a much simpler grammar program.
Two, I can still do a unit study for science. I can’t tell you what a relief that was. I was thinking, and stuck in that as I was writing out lesson plans, despite the fact that I had talked to my friend about doing unit studies that go along with what we are learning, that I was locked in to biology. I am, but there is so much to biology. (yes, it was a DUH moment.) We started a unit study today about oceans. So much biology in that! Along with history as we look at the explorers and find out about ancient explorers and boats.
I will connect them all together as we go about our semester. They are working on some reports right now about some of the ancient history topics we have talked about so far so I won’t add any more reports right now. We will however begin some small projects about the topics as we come across them. Maybe some mini books about the ancient boats. I like to use Dinah Zike’s Big Book of Books for various small projects that we can use to illustrate our mini topics. For example, I could use a folded paper boat shaped like an Egyptian boat and then they can write inside all the info we just learned about the boat that was found at the pyramid in Giza.
In other news, the meat chickens have been taken to the butcher and I have now 30 chickens in the freezer for the winter. The gardens are pretty much done now other than the plants that I planted for a late harvest. I want to add a few other things yet to over winter, like carrots and garlic and maybe more onions. Grapes should be ready early next month so I can make some juice or jam yet. With all of that, I have a pretty good selection of food for the winter. Not much meat, but hopefully, there will be sales on beef and pork over the winter.
Finally, as a sort of last hurrah before it gets cold and icky, we want to do a family campout with my brother and his family. That should be a good time. We want to set up tents in the way back of our 5 acre property, have a bon fire, and just hang out with the kids. It should be a good time. Maybe we can have a fancy dinner set up back there or maybe we will just eat hot dogs and marshmallows roasted over the fire.
What’s going on at your house?? Any fun plans for the fall??
