Must Reads


I have so many fav’s!!  This is just a list off the top of my head one day to get me started writing..

  • “Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse”  Kevin Henkes– actually any of Kevin Henkes books.  They are all awesome!!  I think he also wrote another book I love called “Chrysanthemum”.
  • Laura Joff Numeroff.  She wrote “If you give a Mouse a Cookie”.  She also has several other books following the same format that are fun to read.
  • Dr. Suess– of course everyone HAS to read some of those!!
  • Audrey Wood has several books that are absolutely HYSTERICAL!!!  Our family favorite is “King Bidgood’s in the Bathtub”!!
  • C.W. Anderson has a series of horse books that are so pretty to just look at!! “Billy and Blaze” is one of his series.
  • Maurice Sendek– any of his!
  • Eric Carle– we love the pictures!!  Any of his books are fun- but we love “The Grouchy Ladybug”
  • Mary Pope Osborne has a relatively new series of adventure books that are fun to read and are, as a bonus, historically accurate.
  • “Blueberries for Sal”  by Robert McCloskey. He has several other books but this one is my fav!  I also LOVE “Make Way for Ducklings”
  • “The Story About Ping”  everyone needs to read this one!  So sweet!  Marjorie Flack and Kurt Wiese
  • Of Course the Scholastic Series, “the Magic School Bus”  Amazingly fun books!!!
  • Don Freeman books.  “Corduroy” “Dandelion” and others!  All fun!!
  • “Madeline”!!!!!!  another great book!!
  • The Berenstain bears.  A series by Stan and Jan Berenstain Just a really good wholesome series of common sense books!  and More importantly– they are FUN TO READ!!
  • That right there folks is the key!!!
  • Bill Martin Jr. books..
  • Gene Zion has several books out but one of our favorites is “No Roses For Harry!”
  • “I Spy” books and “I Spy” type books.  We spend hours with these kinds of books and yes we have found everything at least once, but its still fun to look again and again!
  • “Parts” and “More Parts” books by Tedd Arnold.  Just plain FUNNY!!!!!!
  • Shel Silverstein– Awesome poetry that is a stitch to read!
  • “Miss Rumphius” by Barbara Cooney is an awesome book!  She has many others too.
  • Ezra Jack Keats has books that are awesome to read and the pictures are so simple and sweet!!
  • “Mrs. Piggle Wiggle”– she lives in an upside down house and is the most wise woman  in the neighborhood!  She knows children and how to get them to stop their bad habits!  Betty MacDonald
  • Judith Viorst wrote “Alexander and the No Good, Very Bad Day!”  along with several others
  • “Ferdinand the Bull” Don’t remember the author but I love that story!!
  • “Caps for Sale”  by Esphyr Slobodkina
  • Jerry Pallotta has several books that all follow the Alphabet.  Like “The Yucky Reptile Alphabet Book”  and the “Undersea Alphabet book”
  • And then there are beautifully illustrated and historically accurate books by H.C. Holling,  “The Tree in the Trail”.  And and Edgar Parin D’Aulaire’s books like “Book of Greek Myths” and “Pocohantas”

Here is just a sampling of my fav’s!!!
